Read as part of Brimstone Demon Owned Operated, three novella collection You can read the prequel book, Potato Surprise A Brimstone Prequel, for free at most retailers I really like Angel Martinez, and I like her light hearted sci fi stuff I wish this one had a little build up, a little tension between the two MCs I thought that their adventures were fun, but the romance was too insta lovey for me So much potential here, though Moving on to the next book.

Absolutely Delightful Oh, gosh This was so much FUN to read I loved every crazy word of this demonic space adventure Floating, antigravity cows rain patties down in the hold Demons run a space transport business An angel works his way into a demonic heart This book has me writing in sentence fragments it must have something to do with sexy demon horns and angelic voices of doom.

Antigravity cows That s three stars in the bag right there.TL DR funny Space Western with Angels and Demons Read it on a day you re feeling grumpy, it ll perk you up.Andfor the rest of this review, please keep in mind that I am a Science Fiction reader first and foremost And as a reader, I m extremely critical of the majority of books in the romance genre notwithstanding the hypocrisy of having written books that could purportedly belong to that sub genre myself.Angel doesn t suffer from the shortcomings of many of the other authors I ve read in the genre she writes very well, with strong emphasis on craft and a lilting aww shucks voice that goes down very nicely Like Czech beer refinement, without having to work for it But on that noteAngel Martinez is wasted on romance And it s not because she does it poorly I d venture the opposite She s wasted on romance because she does the Science Fiction so damn well, but we don t get enough of it because characters need to bone. Her MCs do interact sweetly enough that I m entertained But the story falls into the same tropes that all romance falls into boy meets boy, boy likes boy, obstacles, tears, passionate declamations, happily ever after at least for now etc etc So Readers who enjoy light M M will get exactly what they expect, and all is well But it s not precisely up my alley. My Alley Firefly The Ship Who Sang Douglas Adams This book swoops into all these territories, lands with a light touch, then takes off again to the roar of the Brimstone s engines Too soon, like the actual Brimstone though in the book they re usually in mortal peril, so that s probably wise. The MC, Shax, and his pilot Verin too much Robert Jordan for me, I had to work to not picture Verin as a short, dumpy, Brown Ajah Aes Sedai, but that s my own reader s baggage and no fault of Angel s descriptive talent and their ship, the Brimstone, has a very Malcom Reynolds Zoe Serenity feel, except that Shax is far vulnerable than Captain Mal, and Verin is grouchier than ZoeTheir ship s computer, the always entertaining AI in drag feels like some of Helva s colleague ships. And then there s the angel demon angle It tastes like Good Omens Shax, in moments, vibrates with Crowley like glee, and Ness s apologies take on Aziraphale s cadences.Space western with demons and angels that doesn t take itself seriously Hell yes Pun not totally intended.Which brings me to that last, fifth star that I couldn t give Perhaps I m throwing a tantrum because of what I didn t get, and really wanted of the good stuff.More of the things I got a tantalizing glimpse of the wistful and mischievous reminiscences of thievery Shax alludes to when he sorts through his box of pretties The fascinating and strange history of Demons in Space The planets, the world building, the ships, the AI, the war The smell of Amnesia, the corridors of the Brimstone, the vegetation with teeth on the cow resupply planet These very Sci Fi touches were created, vividly, in a few sentences This is where this book should have lived But then BOOM we were back to sappy romance stuff Gah view spoiler Even the Big Baddies were un baddified to serve the romantic outcome I d have preferred personality conflicts, character assassinations, ship board politics that don t serve the romantic plot, instead serving the true strengths of Angel s story Example Shax pisses off Ness and Verin simultaneously somehow, and they become allies in thwarting Shax s mania for risky deals hide spoiler

4.5 5.0Angels, Demons, anti gravity cows Didn t expect that did you What a wonderfully fun read We meet Shax and Verin while Shax is stealing some pretties and the men they belong to are trying their best to kill him Verin comes to his rescue and once safely away Shax realizes they have some interesting passengers in the cargo hold Anti gravity cows totally awesome Shax and Verin are demons on the run for reasons that are explained later in the book Shax is a demon prince of thieves which explains his love of the pretties Verin is his business partner and friend When a need arrives for food for their bovine cargo they stop on a planet and find an angel, unconscious and injured Shax cannot leave him and besides, he has golden feathers for wings pretties What follows is a fun tale of two beings that are normally enemies finding out that they have in common than not I enjoyed the humorous mix of space western, adventure, romance, witty banter and the subtle way the author brings in the dichotomy of good and evil, stereotypes, politics and how we are not all painted with a broad stroke There is good, bad and in between in all people, even demons and angels Subtle, and works well with building the relationship between Shax and Ness the angel I adored Shax and found his character easiest to love Verin is the gruffer of the two and I hope he gets page time in the next book which I am very much looking forward to.

The Brimstone series never fails to be charming, hilarious, wacky beyond belief, and still boast one of the most fun ensemble casts I ve ever read In the prequel, we were introduced to our anti heroes Shax and Verin, demons on the run from Earth after ahem a disagreement with management The mysterious Julian made his debut among the gunfire, but when we return to Hell for the Company, it s just our demons and their drag queen AI, Miss Ivana.Still trying to make a somewhat honest living by taking on various jobs delivering cargo, Verin agrees to haul some antigrav cows think, cow balloons while Shax ends up in trouble for stealing synthetic sapphires He can t help it He is the Prince of Thieves, after all When the demons realize they re short on feed for their weightless companions, they make a quick stop at a totally psychedelic planet to harvest some flora That s when they come upon an angel in an escape pod Ness left Heaven after refusing orders to kill Demon or no, he is unwilling to take a life It goes against every fiber of his being Ness isn t a angel warrior like Michael or Raphael He s a healer with a sincere and tender heart And to say that Shax is smitten after rescuing Ness, is most definitely an understatement Ness represents the ultimate challenge bedding a gorgeous and virgin angel Not to mention the pretty gold feathers on his wingsShax and Ness are such wonderful compliments for each other Neither is wholly good or bad, and their elements of moral grayness touch together to fill the missing pieces of a puzzle They help each other grow and ease deep rooted sadness Plus, Ness doesn t take any of Verin s bad attitude, which is always amusing After some radical dealings over Shax s sapphires and an angel posse run in, the crew is three men strong and ready for the next space adventure aboard the Brimstone Angel Martinez doesn t disappoint Period Treat yourself to this amazing series It s bound to lighten any mood after a rough day.

Rating 3 starsI m not a big fan of angel and demon s stories so that may have colored my enjoyment of this book I thought it to be okay I really like the author s writing and I really liked all the characters It just seemed that something was missing Maybe it was because the book was so short or the fact that it ended in a HFN I don t know exactly, but overall it was okay and I will definitely read the next in the series.

This was a fun and sweet little short, and I especially think it was a nice and easy read in audio format I do think that it could have had a little depth to it Shaw immediately feels something when he find the injured Angel, even though he can t describe it or explain it So it s a bit insta lovey He does end up making a lot of sweet observations about Ness and I do believe those feelings, I just wish they would have stayed away from some of the unexplained emotions because it can feel shallow at times. The story isn t really long enough for us to get too invested, but like I said it s light and fun The anti gravity cows were hilarious and I loved the way they were described and Shax s affection for them, the ships computer was also an addition that added to the story Not only was she funny but I liked seeing Shax charm her and their playful banter Because it is short we get a few chapters with Shax and his partner for some decent world building and character development, but then most of the rest of the story focuses on Shax and Ness together which balanced out well.I mentioned world building, and it was pretty good for this length of a story I certainly don t understand everything about this world, I m not even entirely sure if humans know about Angels and Demons But it s not necessary and I don t really care The whole Angel Demon thing is really just a mechanism for our MC s to be archenemies, otherwise they could have been any old space pokes.Vance Bastian did an alright job with the narration At the time I remember thinking there was something I didn t love about the tone he was using, but honestly now as I think back I just remember a pleasant audiobook I m sure this would be a lovely read as well, but if you re an audiobook fan that it s a good option for this short story.I loved Gravitational Attraction by Angel Martinez and after reading this, I know I have an author I can trust with my sexy alien science fiction romances This could certainly have been a full length story as well, and I ll be checking out the rest of the series as well as from Angel Received audio version from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, reviewed for Hearts On Fire

Arg, need to read the sequel now Wicked since of humor, reminds me of Reddwarf at times The ship s name is Brimetstone and its operating computer is Ms Ivana, a drag queen Demons, Shax and Verin are outcasts from Earth, doing shady and legit transport deals, including a delivery of antigravity cows And along the way Shax finds a crash life pod, with a hot sexy angel Shax turns on the seduction tactics to win Ness over But things are just starting in their relationship when this book ends I need to read the sequel
