Sometimes I read a book I love so much I don t know where to start There are not enough words to describe why I love it This is the way I feel about Chipped Black Nail Polish by Nicholas Tanek The story of first love, teenage awkwardness, music lots of it , and finding the confidence to be yourself, is the perfect prequel to The Coolest way to Kill Yourself Set in the summer of 1989, Nicholas is a shy teenager who rides his bike to the record store looking for a new favorite album but instead finds the effortlessly cool, Kim As the summer rolls on you see Nicholas break out of his shell and fall in love Kim takes him on different adventures and introduces him to Di, Gina, and Quentin You will love these people, along with Kevin, Nicholas friend who always has the perfect thing to say to make you laugh It is a brilliantly written story, that is smart, funny, and endearing Chipped Black Nail Polish captures what it is to be a teenager It doesn t matter if you were a teenager in 1989, because the same feelings of being weird, awkward, the odd one out and first love, transcends no matter what year it is When you find those friends or other people who accept and embrace you, those are the ones you don t forget.Nicholas Tanek is one of those few authors that you come across whose words and writing transports you into the story and and makes you feel everything in it Bike rides, music, punk rock clubs, trips to New York, you are with Nicholas, Kim, Di, Gina, Quintin, and Kevin every step of the way I read a quote the other day that said, Some books you read Some books you enjoy, Some books swallow you up, heart and soul Nicholas Tanek s Chipped Black Nail Polish is a book that will definitely touch you heart and soul. I have just taken a journey back to 1989, where if you were a teenager then, you will know, there was no internet to entertain us Life was completely different back then Music in the eighties was loud with unusual band names Punk rock didn t just mean music to Nicholas, it was being cool, it was being a weirdo, it was to embrace life and be proud of who you were Why did we as teenagers cared what people thought, is it not our individuality that defines us as a person, to make our mark in this life Nicholas did not see himself as one of the cool kids, nor did he lead an exciting life, that all changed when he met Kim There is a lot of firsts for Nicholas in this story His life was changed forever This book tells you about a young lady or punk rock queen as, Nicholas would say, who shows Nicholas a different kind of life His summer of 1989 was a wild ride that he never wanted to end and as a reader to be honest even though I gasped a lot at some of the things they got up to, I too never wanted his happiness to end no matter what I thought about how wrong some situations were Nicholas fell in love for the first time in his life and he knew that no matter what happened he couldn t stop himself from loving Kim Parents will tell you, that you are heading for heart break but being a teenager, we believe they can t possibly know or just don t care Nicholas wasn t a man of the world, he was a New Jersey weirdo, learning about life, with a little help from his friends Oh how I have laughed reading the conversations between him and his best friend Kevin and the maxi pads comment by Kim and what Nicholas thought when she said that, I laughed so much.Teenage thinking is so humorous but it reminds us how things are so fresh and new, when growing up, exciting adventures to be had, whether it s a first date, your first kiss, even for some your first time at a concert and being thrown into the pit What s a pit read and find out Actually while thinking about questions, I have one for the Author What are monkey balls now I know what you lot are thinking, eh she doesn t know what monkey balls are, of course I know that, but these monkey balls were not written in the context.Life was not easy in the eighties so much racism and homophobia I mean it still exists today but back then there were no gay rights People could of made racial comments, hurtful comments but Nicholas didn t care who was black or white, gay or lesbian, he never judged I wishpeople could have been like him. This book will have you thinking back to your teenage years, I think we all have done something crazy as teenagers Tried things that we shouldn t have but it all goes down to experience, some will live and learn by their mistakes Nicholas always knew he was different from what society calls normal but that s okay, it has made him the man he is today and in my opinion he is a brilliant writer I wasn t only drawn to the story but I connected with it too To smile while reading a book, then laugh and go through certain emotions as sadness can only be a credit to the Author to make you feel all these This book is a must read I will definitely be recommending it Thank you Nicholas Tanek for taking me through a story of New Jersey s punk rock. I just finished reading a book about a 13 year old Nicholas Tanek and his experience of one summer in 1989 This story tells us about his first Love and how that Love changed him for the rest of his life I was taken on a journey that starts with a shy boy that has so many of the same fears and secrets that most teenage boys his age had But Nicholas was a special soul, he loved music and movies I am not just talking about the usual big hair band music that was so common during that era, but all the underground Punk Rock music that came from New Jersey and all over the world during that time Nicholas was and is a free thinker and didn t follow the regular crowds, I don t think he followed any crowds for that matter But still he worried about the usual things a teenager did, like pimples on his face and if that pretty girl would think he was a weirdo From a young age Nicholas knew he was different and wanted different things from life He had desires that most would find strange in his mind and he hide them from the world That is until he met Kim, she found him in his favorite place, a record store Nicholas was taken, literally taken by Kim and she showed him things that obviously he will never forget, otherwise he wouldn t have wrote this book Kim was troubled, crazy, beautiful, adventurous and daring Nicholas saw Kim as a Goddess, someone that he loved, from almost the very first moment he met her they had a connection Once again Nicholas has made me feel like he was on my couch telling me his story And then he touch my heart with this book, it had me engrossed and I didn t want to put it down, unfortunately life made me stop a few times but I finally got to the end and I had to start writing my review right away The last half of this book was the best part in my opinion, it was so sad and meaningful, I just wanted to hug Nicholas and tell him he was going to be ok And then he surprised me and I literally gasped I loved the ending and I also understand his first book The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself a little better too If you are looking for something different to read I would say you need, no you must read this book and then meet the real Nicholas and read his first book I will be telling all my friends about this one Of course I am leaving a 5 star review for this book, what else is there to do My favorite quote Never apologize for being weird Kim once told me. I think Nicholas has become one of my favorite storytellers I don t mean this to be a simple compliment Great storytelling is an art form to me Nicholas paints pictures with his words She was chaos What better person to guide me through chaos than someone who is chaos themselves He takes us to a place in time as teens where we awkwardly debate whether to be our own person, expressing our secret unpopular opinions out loud or just imitate what everyone else is doing and conform under layers of Aquanet We were united by diversity, we were a little different from each other, but our rejection of popular culture brought us together He sucked me into a world that was so crazy and exciting to experience as a reader It almost made me feel like a teenager again This book wasthan Nicholas losing his virginity and first loves He learned through Kim and her beautiful band of weirdos, that being weird is the coolest. As a teenager, if you ve ever looked around and thought, Where do I belong With whom do I most relate , then you might want to pick this book up Nicholas Tanek takes us on yet another fascinating journey in this, his second book, and the prequel to The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself In his first book, we got to know, well, everything there is to know about him in his late teen years and adult life He laid his soul bare in tribute to the love of his life, Lynn to the girl who thought no one would ever write anything about her But in this book, we learn about how this shy, kind of dorky, thirteen year old boy becomes the assured, confident young man we read about in The Coolest Way You might say it sounds like a predictable storyline But only a few of us in this life meet a force of nature like Kim Kim is the girl every parent fears their child will bring home from school one day Kim is the girl you walk on the other side of the sidewalk from when you see her approach And yet secretly, when you look at her, you wish you could be that cool Nicholas teaches us about Kim, about how Kim helps Nicholas discover himself Through this book, you come to realize that Kim is not who she appears to be, and that perhaps we should all take a lesson in how looks and behaviors can be very deceiving This is a journey through the mind of a troubled teenager and the innocent boy who knows nothing else except that she needs to be loved And, with all things Nicholas Tanek, you will finish the book with a whole list of bands and songs to go look up and enjoy In fact, I suggest you look them up and get them before starting the book playlists are included at the end of the book , so that you can listen to them as you read about each one They are of particular significance and are not chosen at random See if you can find the meaning of each of the bands and the songs Nicholas chose to include in CBNP In this book I found my people This guy gets it because he lived through it haha I was a wierd theatre kid in high school and later college, I dyed my hair black because we wanted to do a murder mystery dinner theatre in a film noir style and have it look like a black and white movie I mean who comes up with this stuff I love music and my vinyl collection is one of my pride and joys In this book I found people who are cut from the same cloth It s an intense book and just a slice of life a small portion of a life but definitely one of the defining moments A coming of age story with a few quirks and bumps along the road but with a killer soundtrack I had moments where I needed to stop reading and get a cup of coffee and I would just sit there and blink, almost like real life was just too bright and real after being immersed in the scene And after I finished I thought this is why I hung out with the art students and creative types for Nicholas and his group that summer it was about acceptance and freedom That group accepted everyone and celebrated their quirks and loves them anyway I can tell you from experience that feeling of love and acceptance is the best feeling ever, it s almost like flying You may feel like a awkward kid and that nobody could possibly understand and then you fall in with a group of people and you become a part of a whole It frees you to become the best possible version of yourself I think one of my favorite elements of this book was the music, the attention and descriptive detail he puts into describing each band and each song It lends to the moment in a huge way My favorite part of the book was when after Kim s party there is a discussion about acoustic music and it was spot on I am a huge fan of acoustic music because, you can feel the heart and soul of the music The pulse that throbs through it It s unapologetic and unflinchingly real which is exactly the words I would use to describe this book I will definitely have to get a print copy of this one because it deserves to be one of the few that I have to actually hold in my hands and touch the pages and words. From the start, Nicholas pulled me right into his story, as he did with his first book, The Coolest Way It was so easy for the events to unfold in my mind like a film, and many times I found myself laughing out loud As song references appear in the story, they add another dimension to the tale Make note of the soundtrack at the end, just like originalninny suggested If you are not familiar with the music and take the time to listen to the songs, you will realize how perfectly they suit each scene This author has the most musical mind I know Listening as you read will put you inside his mind, inside his life, in a very unique way.Even though CBNP is only 150 pages, the characters are incredibly well developed, colorful, and diverse My experiences at that age were drastically different than the chaotic antics of his friends, but I still found so many ways to relate to the characters What I enjoyed most was meeting inexperienced, insecure Nicholas a very different young man than the cocky jerk we meet at the start of The Coolest Way People are complex I enjoyed the opportunity to relate to him in a different way than I did in the other story. This tale is overall lighter than the other book, but at the same time, it digs deep It explores feelings of insecurity and the different ways we all deal with those feelings Young Nicholas feels like he has finally found people he can relate to, even though they still make him feel like an outsider at times Even as he lets himself be influenced by their craziness, he starts to learn how to think for himself. If you haven t read TCW, this novella will leave you eager to know what comes next If you have read TCW, then you will definitely have an awesome time reading about the first of many crazy young women who stole Nicholas Tanek s heart. This is the prequel to THE COOLEST WAY TO KILL YOURSELF To when Nicholas is a thirteen year old kid with some well lets say different tastes in music One day he is in the right place at the right time where he falls head over heels with the coolest punk girl He is pulled into a world of punk rock music and the girl of his dreams Where he fell in love and got dumped all in one summer But it was the best summer of his life I was so sucked into this book when I started reading it The story flowed so well and you can just feel the angst of the kids just pouring off the page You find yourself thinking about your teen years as you read this book The good and the bad parts of it You will just get sucked into their lives and you will shed a tear or two as you read The ending is so sad I cried , not going to tell you what happens But you just want to take Nicholas in your arms and hug him tight and wipe away his tears The characters are so well developed and each of them have their unique sense of being Kim is the wild child that is like the fire cracker of the group Kevin is the best friend to Nicholas They remind me of some of the kids I went to school with They are all individuals but also work great as the whole group They are outsiders and stick together through thick and thin The author takes us on such a ride in this book It islight hearted then his first book but it still sends us a great message It is ok to be different and unique There is first love, drugs and some awesome tunes in this book You will laugh and cry and think Even when you finish the book , you will be introduced to some cool bands Which honestly I never heard about before these books So if you want a book to add to your summer reading list Check it out I know you wont be disappointed at all Omg I loved it I was immediately drawn into this book Nicholas has a unique writing style This story was absolutely mindblowing It is about when he was 13 years old living in New Jersey and he meets and falls in love for the first time This girl he falls for is a punk rock chick and a bit older 3yrs He right away falls for her uniqueness and they share the love of music and being different from others I can actually relate to some of the era he is writing about late 80 s era Except, I was the aquanet, bighair disco dancing queen, Lol He takes us through his love journey using music and movies to explain the openness of his mind I loved it Kim name of the puck chick opens up his sexual desires She is a very domineering individual and actually makes Nicholas see thingsfor what it is He experiences many first with her, sex, drugs, concerts etc I find that so intoxicating to read about their epic adventures I am a California girl and reading about how some New Jersey kids partied and evolved with puck rock music was very resourceful and exciting So, I give this book a 5 star because of his quirkiness and individualism towards music and punk era I enjoyed reading it emmensly Great Job again Nicholas I am so looking forward to your future reads I am your newiest fangirl winks A Tribute To A Different Kind Of Jersey Girl In New Jersey During The Summer Of , An Awkward Thirteen Year Old Who Was Obsessed With Weird Music Fell Head Over Heels In Love With The Coolest Post Punk Rock Girl He Had Ever Met Nicholas Was Insecure He Was A Daydreamer, Wishing For Romance When He Was Told, Over And Over, That He Could Not Have It He Was A Toy, Pulled And Pushed, Wanted And Used, Dragged Along Yet Held At A Distance Nicholas Fell In With The Out Crowd, And Loved Every Minute Of It He Fell In Love And Got Left Behind, But Not Before She Changed Him Forever This Is An Irrational, Emotional Love Story For The Teenager Inside All Of Us The Music Is Loud, And You Re About To Be Pushed Into The PitWhat Some People Are Saying I Should Have Put You In Therapy My Mother I Insist That You Use My Real Name Kevin Finally, A Title That Doesn T Scare People Off Not Like The First Book, The Coolest Way To Kill Yourself Kim Gray, Publicist CHIPPED BLACK NAIL POLISH Paperback Is Available Now Exclusively Through Outskirts Press Soon, It Will Be On And BN Eventually, It Will Be On Kindle CBNP TheCoolestWay NewAdult
