A wide ranging look at the fascinatingly diverse syncretic melange of religion in Java Inevitably the most interesting part to me was at the beginning, about the folk religion Geertz calls the abangan strain Later chapters on the santri, self consciously Muslim, strain which is as much about political party organization as religious practice and prijaji, aristocratic mystic tradition which gets into linguistic levels of politeness, interestingly similar to Japanese which I speak somewhat, and is rather vague about the actual mysticism are also interesting but less immediately so Plenty to ponder Now I want one about Bali, which maybe will have less of the strangeness of culture heroes who brought Islam as well as the wayang and batik dyeing to Java, but perhaps therefore of the so called folk religion which I find so satisfying and interesting. This book is based on Clifford Geertz b1926 PhD Thesis, written between 1951 1952 and submitted in 1956 I certainly admire his effort to document the Javanese culture and provide as most important sources into the understanding of Javanese. However as this is a scientific document, we also need to see the methodology that he used in his study As a trained anthropologist he used the Thematic Apperception Test TAT , the best he can do to obtain understanding His theory is that culture is complicated as so many symbols that used So this should not be seen as right or wrong but as the beginning of in depth research in Indonesian culture. The most important lesson that I learn from this book is I think is written in the last part of this book where he mentions about conflict and integration, especially in term of changes The abangan, santri and priyayi most likely will no longer operate with traditional effectiveness and forced contact between the two world views occur This book consists of three parts 1 Abangan 2 Santri and 3 Priyayi Part 1 is very detail, describing the javanese culture, as Indonesian, I learned about javanese culture from this book, if the purpose of science is to preserve humanity then Geertz already make big achievement here Part 2 is complicated as it tries to contrast between traditional NU and modernist Muhammadiyah Part 3 is clearer as it try to contrast an art aspect from traditional abangan and educated priyayi. santri, abangan, dan priyati, adalah tipologi yang dikenalkanoleh geertz tentang bagaimana perkembangan masyarakat islam di jawa konsepnnya ini bukan lah satu stratifikasi, melainkan diferensiasi, artinya bahwa itu merupakan satu hal yang bukan dilakukan untuk memasukkan manusia ke dalam klas dan memiliki status yang vertikal, melainkan lebih cenderung ke arah horisontal akan teapi perlu dipahami bahwa tipologi tersebut tidaklah bersifat ajeg kepada satu orang, buktinya ada semacam pergeseran pandangan dan mind set tentang sebagian ornag, ketika ia muda menjadi abangan atau priyayai, teetapiketika tua menjadi santri tapi yang jelas buku ini sungguh menambah khazanah pemikiran saya sebagai pendidik dan pegnamat masalah sosial dan budayathanks geerz First book I read on Indonesia as an undergraduate studentgot me hooked Contextual Penelitian Geertz dimulai sekitar tahun 1950 Lalu, diterbitkan menjadi buku pada tahun 1985 Konon, karya ini menjadi populer pada waktu itu Buku yang tebalnya bisa menggantikan bantal ini memang memberi kontribusi yang perlu Namun, lebih perlu lagi dilakukan penelitian yang serupa pada zaman ini Orang orang berubah, demikian budaya. I appreciate the tremendous wok that has crept into the writing of this book I especially enjoyed the many notes or quotes from the conversations Geertz has with his informants On the whole I am not convinced by Geertz s analysis He offers no proof whatsoever that there is an Abangan and Priyayi religion Besides his annoying habit of using concepts such as religion, tradition, mysticism, ideology, syncretism, tolerance, in a fuzzy and sometimes interchangeable manner there is a complete lack of theory to support his contention that there is Javanese i.e Abangan or Priyayi religion. Written With A Rare Combination Of Analysis And Speculation, This Comprehensive Study Of Javanese Religion Is One Of The Few Books On The Religion Of A Non Western People Which Emphasizes Variation And Conflict In Belief As Well As Similarity And Harmony The Reader Becomes Aware Of The Intricacy And Depth Of Javanese Spiritual Life And The Problems Of Political And Social Integration Reflected In The Religion The Religion Of Java Will Interest Specialists In Southeast Asia, Anthropologists And Sociologists Concerned With The Social Analysis Of Religious Belief And Ideology, Students Of Comparative Religion, And Civil Servants Dealing With Governmental Policy Toward Indonesia And Southeast Asia Sangat membantu saya dalam menyelesaikan skripsi Secara detail Geertz menulis gambaran masyarakat Jawa dengan setting pedesaan era 1950 an Satu hal yang paling saya ingat dalam buku ini adalah tentang prosesi perkawinan antara laki laki dan perempuan yang belum haid, di mana si pengantin perempuan harus dipangku oleh si calon suami Sepertinya poin yang diceritakan Geertz tersebut sudah benar benar tidak ada lagi pada masa sekarang.
